Drilling Down on EPA Risk Assessment: REGISTER HERE

Since 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken big steps to better estimate pesticide risks to bees. In this session, we will explore EPA’s approach by following a pesticide through its assessment of risks to bees to its appearance in the marketplace. Join us to answer our question – is the EPA effectively protecting bees? EAS Award to Krispn Given https://www.beeculture.com/eas-award-to-krispn-given/ Wed, 23 Aug 2023 14:00:53 +0000 https://www.beeculture.com/?p=45955 Krispn Given is the 2023 recipient of the Prestigious Roger A. Morse Outstanding Teaching/Extension Service/Regulatory Award from the Eastern Apicultural Society
www.easternapiculture.org

“It was a big surprise and deeply honored to receive this award!”
-Krispn Given

Roger A. Morse Outstanding Teaching/Extension Service/Regulatory Award
Supported by Anita Weiss Foundation

This award was founded in 1999 as a memorial to Dr. Roger Morse, who pioneered today’s Master Beekeeper Program. Dr. Morse was an American bee biologist and beekeeper. Morse was a professor of entomology at Cornell University from 1957 to 1989 who was an illustrious researcher, author, and educator, held in great esteem by generations of scientists and citizen beekeepers. The award is presented each year at the annual awards banquet and dinner.

The 2023 winner of the Roger A. Morse Outstanding Teaching/Extension Service/Regulatory Award is Krispn Given. In 2003 he joined the Department of Entomology at Purdue University, he is the Senior Apiculture Specialist specializing in honey bee breeding and research. He has been involved in many beekeeping education programs and he teaches a class in queen rearing and a more advanced course in instrumental insemination that draws folks from around the world each year.

At Purdue, he maintains a honey bee breeding program now in its 26 year with close to 120 colonies breeding for behavioral resistance to the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor. He is best known for his innovative work in honey bee breeding and developing the popular IN Mite-biter honey bee, a strain of bees that groom themselves free of the mites then bite them. He worked with honey bee geneticist Dr Greg Hunt for 16 years and together they developed a bee that is more resistant to the varroa mite. Today he is recognized as one of the preeminent international authorities in the fields of instrumental insemination and honey bee breeding. Many beekeeper’s and commercial beekeepers are using the mite-biter stock in their operations with great success. Given said he is “deeply honored” to be a recipient of this award “The field of honey bee breeding is so critical to reducing the negative impacts of varroa” It is our pleasure to recognize Krispn Given as the 24th Rodger A. Morse winner.

Krispn Given received the award Friday August 4, 2023, at the awards banquet dinner.

4 – 8 September 2023 | Santiago, Chile

Apimondia is the International Organization of Beekeeping Associations that brings together scientists, specialists and beekeepers from around the world and in 2023 Chile will host this international event.

The setting for this congress is Santiago, the capital of Chile, with the snow-capped Andes mountains as a backdrop. Technical tours will take you to nearby beekeeping operations and the chance to visit world class bodegas to taste Chilean wines. During the Apimondia Congress you can meet old friends and make new ones as you tour the ApiEXPO and take in the latest science and beekeeping ideas.

The 48th Apimondia Congress will have three days focused on:

Sustainable beekeeping in a changing world
Focus on sustainable beekeeping and include the act of bee farming using principles of ecology, where the use of bees respects the rules of their environment. Beekeeping that respects the environment can be sustainable and profitable, even as climate change is making beekeeping more challenging.

Value added products from the hive
Honey and beeswax are the primary products that beekeepers rely upon. However, propolis, pollen, royal jelly, body products, bee venom and more are valuable products from the hive that beekeepers large and small can use to increase profits from beekeeping. Additionally, these products are valuable food and therapeutic resources that contribute to both food and pharmaceutical industries ensuring better human health. This day will focus on these “value added products” and how to integrate them into your beekeeping.

Land use, biodiversity and beekeeping
The roles that land use change and biodiversity play in the health and productivity of managed and wild bees will be discussed. Beekeeping relies on having good forage and this is in tern impacted by changing land use patterns. In particular, intensive farming, urbanization and climate change are making it difficult to find good locations for managed bees and impacting wild pollination.

Uvalde Honey Festival https://www.beeculture.com/uvalde-honey-festival/ Wed, 12 Jul 2023 14:00:46 +0000 https://www.beeculture.com/?p=45369 ‘We are one big bee hive:’ Uvalde festival celebrates honey’s power to heal wounds and soothe souls

Texas Public Radio | By Brian Kirkpatrick

Brian Kirkpatrick / Eighteen-year-old Cashlyn Varnon was selected as this year’s festival Honey Queen.

Uvalde brought back its Honey Fest tradition this weekend to celebrate the local industry, little more than one year after the Robb Elementary School shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead. It was cancelled last year because of the tragedy.

The bees that produce the region’s honey and the townspeople both share a strong sense of community.

“They are tough, and they are going to do everything they can to survive. They work together, and they all pull their weight. And it’s all about the hive,” said local beekeeper Linda Williams.

Fellow local beekeeper Chianne Delacerda liked the comparison, too. Delacerda operates Deer Valley Apiary just outside Uvalde.

“The community still tries to come together,” she said. “We still try to stay cohesive as a unit. Everyone kind of supports each other through everything.”

Festival manager Gloria Reza agreed.

“We are one big beehive. We’re a bunch of worker bees, and we will find a way to pick up the pieces,” she said. “Not just from this tragedy, but from anything that has happened to us.”

It’s clear the residents of this farm and ranching town will always remember the shooting victims.

Eighteen-year-old Honey Queen Cashlyn Varnon was asked if the festival is a step toward a new normal. “A little bit. It’s definitely still different,” she said.

The festival was held at the town square in the heart of Uvalde. There were all sorts of vendors, including those selling honey, made by the area’s bees.

At the park’s center, however, remained the wooden crosses with the names of those who died, along with photos and mementos from their lives.

Brian Kirkpatrick / Wooden crosses remain at the center of the Uvalde town square, where Uvalde held its 2023 Honey Fest.

And in the countryside around the town, bees were busy collecting nectar from wildflowers dotting the landscape, including from Guajillo brush, which produces what one beekeeper called a light, sweet, beautiful honey.

The beekeepers explained that honey has healing properties for humans — a quality Uvalde treasures more than ever before.
